Beryl is from Johannesburg, South Africa and immigrated to the US after spending a few years in Europe. She won the money she needed to move here betting on horse races. She found herself living in Tampa, Florida and met a minister who taught her how to live here illegally. She essentially got a new identity once she got a Social Security Number and bank account. She changed her backstory and worked to get rid of her accent to fit in. She came out as a lesbian while married to a man, then split up and moved to Chicago with her first girlfriend.
